INSTRUCTIONS.
- Answer all questions
Women make up half of the world’s population. On this basis one might expect that work and its rewards would be shared equally between men and women. Unfortunately that is not the case. Infact, in most countries there is discrimination against women in term of work, rewards for the work, ownership of properly, legal rights, social opportunities and political responsibilities.
In many societies today, especially where it is difficult to be financially for rising up the children, feeding, and looking after their family health. In addition to their domestic work, many women also have to work on the land or in factors to add to the family income.
In Africa, although women do 60% of agricultural work 50% of the caring of animals and all the food processing, they have no right to any of the income from the sales of the produce or ownership of the land. Women are also responsible in collecting firewood and fetching water. They make a great contribution to the development of their countries through this unpaid labour.
Many different kinds of jobs are not available to woman even though research shows that with the right training, women can do most jobs. Where women get the same jobs as men, they have the same work for less pay, and they are rarely given positions for authority.
The legal status of women is shown by whether they are allowed to own properties borrow money or vote in elections. Worldwide women have fewer representatives in the governments and only in very few countries such as India, Israel, United Kingdom and Sri-lanka have women ever held the highest political positions.
There cannot be real equality between men and women until there are equal educational opportunities until then, a lot of talents will be wasted and economic development needs all the talents it can find from its people. However, it must be on equal basis for men and women.
